PRINCIPLE

The main goal of RIOCATH MEDICAL DEVICES, a.s., is further development and commercialization of catheters based on the “inside out principle” to broad international audience.

The word Riocath is partially based on the description of the principle on which the company was founded - Reverse Inside-Out CATHeter. This description outlines the principle behind the revolutionary invention of Dr. Miroslav Svoboda. This entirely new construction of medical catheters is based on the principle which could be best described as “unrolling”. The Riocath catheter is thanks to its construction much gentler for the patients with number of benefits, such as safety, risk free application and comfort.

Construction

Although the design of the catheter is truly unique from a mechanical standpoint, in terms of exterior view it looks and works the same way as the eye of a snail or a slug that is "unrolling" from the inside out. Riocath is based on a gradual unrolling of the inner wall of the catheter, which at its tip gradually rolls into the outer wall - as the catheter is continuously turning inside out. Instead of moving along the wall of the surrounding tube such as urethra, trachea, etc. (as is the case with conventional catheters) the Riocath catheter continues to gently lay itself inside the tube’s perimeter.

STORY

Making lives better

Story behind the invention of the Riocath catheter

The very beginning of the story was a serious injury of Dr. Miroslav Svoboda, the inventor of the Riocath principle. When he was 18, he fell from a 20-meter rock and was condemned to the role of a bed-ridden patient for two years.  During hospitalization he experienced many surgeries and bladder catheterizations. He even graduated from technical high school while still being in the hospital.

After recovery, he decided to study medicine, which was preceded by a long preparation and work as a surgical and autopsy technician. Following the graduation from the College of Medicine, Charles University in Prague he started to work as a surgeon. There, catheterization began to be his “daily bread”, but this time he stood on the other side, as a doctor.

The synthesis between technical and medical education combined with his practical experiences gave Dr. Svoboda the idea of developing a catheter, which would not only be gentle to insert, but also eliminate the risk of injury and infection to patients.
